Whether you're working in an office, a shop, or any other environment, being able to communicate effectively in Baba Malay can enhance your professional relationships and make your daily tasks smoother. We’ll cover key phrases, specific vocabulary, practice dialogues, and cultural notes that highlight the unique aspects of working in a Peranakan context.


Phrases for the Workplace



1. Starting the Day:


"S'lamat pagi, semua." (Good morning, everyone.)


2. Asking for Help/Providing Help:


"Boleh tolong gua?" (Can you help me?)

"Dia Mintak Tolong." (He requested help.)

“Amcham gua boleh tolong lu?” (How can I help You?)


3. Work Arrangements:


"Kreja malam" (Night Shift; Night Duty)

"Kreja ringan" (Light duties)

“Kreja terok” (Heavy Workload)


4. Providing Feedback:


"Sambair lewa" (to perform (a job) sloppily)


5. Ending the Day:


"S'lamat tinggair, jumpa lagik besok." (Goodbye, see you again tomorrow) (Spoken by the person leaving)

"S'lamat jalan" (Good bye) (Spoken to the person leaving)


-Common Professions:


"Dokter" (Doctor)

"Brinio" (Police Inspector)

"Chong Po" (Cook/Chef)

"Chikgu" (Teacher)

"Mata-mata" (Police Officer)

Always address superiors and elders with appropriate titles and formal speech.

Example: Using "Bibik" or "Baba" before names for men and women respectively.

Politeness is key in all interactions. Use polite forms and expressions even when giving instructions or feedback.
